Bunyonyi is a local phrase meaning “Place of Little birds” , this lake is home to 200 species of water birds making it another popular bird-watching destination in Uganda. However one of the top attractions on Lake Bunyonyi are the 29 islands with the most popular ones being Akampene island (Punishment island) where unmarried pregnant girls were exiled and the Bwama and Njuyeera (Sharp’s Island) where an English missionary by the names of Leonard Sharp established a leprosy treatment center , church , patient quaters and medical facility.
