All about Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Gorilla trekking is currently the most popular safari activity in Uganda. Great appreciation to the conservation team which has strived to protect the endangered mountain gorillas whose population is increasing. There are only three countries you can see mountain gorillas; Uganda. Rwanda and the DR Congo and Uganda boasts the highest population of these giant primates. The prime gorilla trekking safari destination in Uganda is Bwindi Impenetrable national park found in Kabale district, in the southwestern corner of the country. Bwindi is a rain forest characterized with thick undergrowth located on varying landscape of an undulating terrain. It is divided into four sectors each with a variety of habituated mountain gorillas. They include Buhoma, Rushaga, Nkuringo and Ruhija. You can go trekking in any of these sectors as long as the permits for the location are available and booked in advance. Each of the sectors offers a unique thrilling experience of gorilla trekking.

An alternative destination for gorilla trekking in Uganda is Mgahinga national park. It is also known as a place where silver meets gold because it is home to mountain gorillas including silver backs and golden monkeys. Gorilla trekking in Mgahinga and Bwindi is different because of the nature of the landscape; Bwindi has a thicker vegetation and the terrain is hillier compared to Bwindi’s. Mgahinga is also located in the far southwestern part of Uganda in Kisoro district just close to Bwindi forest national park.

Searching for mountain gorillas in the Pearl of Africa is such a memorable thing that many describe as a life changing experience. The activity begins at the starting points of the parks; Bwindi forest or Mgahinga national park and trekkers penetrate inside with a ranger guide to areas where the gorillas are expected to be roaming. Depending on the movement level of the gorillas, the trek can last for an hour or as long as 6 hours.

The cost of a gorilla permit in Uganda

A gorilla permit is the document that allows a visitor to go watch gorillas. In Uganda, this permit costs US$ 700 for foreign nonresidents, US$ 600 for foreign residents and UGX. 250,000 for East African citizens. The price for a gorilla permit is the same for Bwindi Impenetrable national park and Mgahinga national park.

How to book for a gorilla permit

You can purchase a gorilla permit up to two years prior to your travel date. It is obtained from Uganda Wildlife Authority through a registered tour company which you need to check if it is a member of the Uganda Tourism Board.

Best time for gorilla trekking

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is an all year –round activity although the dry season (January- February and June to September) is regarded as the best time because it offers easy trekking conditions. During the wet season, the trails are slippery and more challenging but tis experience becomes enjoyable for some travelers.
