Lake Mburo

Are You planning a road trip in Lake Mburo national park? It is important to note that, surprising, the park is the smallest savannah national park in Uganda. It is located along the Masaka – Mbarara Highway and it is close to Kampala capital city. Lake Mburo occupies an area of about 370 square kilometers covering all the five lakes. It is dominated by an exceptional landscape that comprises of abundant Acacia tree valleys, open savannah grasslands, seasonal and permanent wetlands. The park is famously known for harboring unique wildlife that is not easy to spot else where in other protected areas of the country.

Lake Mburo harbors about 68 mammals and over 315 bird species including the rare shoebill stork. Wildlife in the park include; the Impala antelopes, waterbucks, bushbucks, Duikers, Elands, Rothchild Giraffes, Burchell’s Zebras, African buffaloes among others.

Historically, in the 1963, the park was gazzated as a game reserve but remained a grazing and hunting ground of the Bahima/ Banyankole. By 1983, it was upgraded as national park and the Banyankole people were forced out of the area. Unfortunately, they never embraced Obote government and the rules protected area, thus they revenged by killing many animals and cultivate part of the reserve. However, when NRM government came power, it re-gazzated the national park and renamed the smallest savannah national park in the Pearl of Africa.
